My Watercolour Story

I posted a video discussing this topic.

I do not think I should repeat myself here. I will, however, share a few thoughts on the subject. In a reply to one of my viewers when discussing creative block, I mentioned my fear of taking a creative detour and getting further away from my medium of choice: writing. I go on to explain:

I struggled a long time, longer than I’d like to admit, with my writing. I still do but the creative need is still there and I had to give it an outlet – enter watercolour. What is surprising is that, since it requires a very different approach than writing, it’s like a whole different set of creative muscles waking up.

My writing is extremely conceptual and experimental, I take risks and stretch the imagination. Then again, language is a medium I played with my whole life. Painting is new to me, so I am still building the basic skills, like a child sounding out words, and I am curious to see how it evolves – what could I do when I can finally take off the training wheels and run with it? What will be my style, my creative point of view, how will I define my aesthetic experience? On the other hand, I sometimes wonder if taking this artistic detour is just another excuse not to deal with my writing... Even if it is, maybe that’s okay too.

I hope you find your subject, track it, and pin it down. What people don’t realize is that creatives can be damn stubborn and focused. I’d also like to think we’re resilient. We’ve defeated white pages and canvasses in the past, no reason we can’t defeat the blank one we’re facing now.

Getting natural light is useful though sometimes you get distracted by the view... or the football match,

Them's fighting words, if you will permit me the colloquialism. How much of it is pure bravado? How much is sincere sentiment? There is an underlining sense of hope I would like to hold on to.

Have you ever had to deal with the type of creative block that makes you question your creative purpose and identity? How did you work through it or around it? Did you ever wonder whether you were trying to slay dragons or were simply tilting at windmills?
